Swat is a beautiful valley in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province that is well-known for its natural landscape, vibrant culture, and rich history. Millions of tourists visit it every year as a result of its popularity as a travel destination.
Overcoming Challenges: Swat Motorway Phase 2 Project
There have also been numerous difficulties for Swat in the past, including militancy, flooding, and inadequate infrastructure. These elements have hindered the region's economic and social development and reduced the standard of living for its residents.
The former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial administration had launched a major project, the Swat Motorway Phase 2, to overcome these issues and realise Swat's potential. This undertaking wad a continuation of the Swat Motorway Phase 1 project, which linked Chakdara to Kernal Sher Khan Interchange and was finished in June 2019. From Chakdara to Fatehpur, a distance of 88 kilometers, the Swat Motorway Phase-II will extend the road. An estimated 58 billion rupees will be spent on the project's construction through a public-private partnership.
A game-changer for the Swat region
A game-changer for the Swat region, the Swat Motorway Phase 2 will offer numerous features and advantages. These include:
It will initially have four lanes, with the option of six lanes in the future. This will assure quick and easy traffic flow, cut down on travel time, and save on gasoline.
Nine interchanges will be located along the route in various places, allowing for easier traffic flow and less congestion. Additionally, the interchanges will offer access to a number of local towns and cities, including Shamozai, Barikot, Mingora, Kanju, Malam Jabba, Sher Palam, Matta Khwazakhela, and Madayan.
It will have eight bridges over the River Swat, which will ensure smooth and safe travel. The bridges will also enhance the scenic beauty of the highway and provide a panoramic view of the river and the valley.
Equipped with modern facilities
It will be constructed using modern techniques and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, such as CCTV cameras, emergency call boxes, rest areas, service stations, toll plazas, etc. These facilities will ensure the comfort and safety of travelers and prevent accidents and mishaps.
It may boost local economy
It will create many job opportunities for local people, including laborers, engineers, and other skilled workers. The project will also boost the local economy by increasing trade and commerce activities related to agriculture, horticulture, handicrafts, etc.
It may encourage tourism in the region
It will promote tourism in the region by providing better connectivity and easier access to major tourist attractions, such as Malam Jabba Ski Resort, Mahodand Lake, Kalam Valley, Bahrain Valley, Madyan Valley, etc. The project will also attract more domestic and foreign tourists to Swat and generate more revenue for the tourism industry.
Preserving natural beauty and will reduce pollution
It will have significant environmental benefits by reducing air pollution and noise pollution caused by traffic congestion. The project will also preserve the natural beauty of the region by minimizing land acquisition and tree cutting.
Major challenges
One of the major challenges faced by the project is land acquisition. The project requires about 10,000 kanals of land for construction. However, some local people have expressed their concerns about losing their agricultural land or being under-compensated for their land. They have demanded that the project should avoid using fertile land or use the wasteland along the river instead.
Steps taken to address the issues
The provincial government has taken several steps to address these issues and ensure that the land acquisition process is fair and transparent. The Central Development Working Party has approved the PC-1 for land acquisition for phase 2 of the Swat Motorway Project and submitted it to the National Economic Council’s executive committee for final approval which is expected to be granted soon. The government has allocated Rs 20 billion for land acquisition and compensation. The government has also assured that it will follow all legal procedures and consult with all stakeholders before acquiring any land. The government has also promised to provide alternative livelihood opportunities for those who lose their land or income due to the project.
Final note
The Swat Motorway Phase-II is a visionary project that will transform the Swat region into a hub of economic and social development. It will improve the quality of life of its people and showcase its beauty to the world. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.
